America Out Loud PULSE: Medical Q&A

From my America Out Loud Pulse podcast with Dr. Nancey Tsai – Sex trafficking of children, fentanyl overdoes, homelessness, medical Q&A- https://www.americaoutloud.news/sex-trafficking-on-children-fentanyl-overdoses-homelessness-pulse-qa/

Buying or soliciting children for sex is a mere misdemeanor in California. And believe it or not, members of the state legislature are debating whether to make it a felony.

The New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has released a health advisory after human infections from rat urine – called leptospirosis —  have been on the rise.

In 2023, fentanyl overdoses claimed 112,000 lives, with young people and people of color among the hardest hit.

California’s programs to combat homelessness has $24 billion that is unaccounted for.

When only 23 percent of California 8th grade students are proficient in math, California has adopted the toolkit for “equitable math instruction” where one guideline asserts that “white supremacy” for teachers to demand that students “show their work.”  How dumb is that: showing your work shows that you can think. We all know a phone app can give the right answer.

I fear what is happening to medicine when according to an April 2024 Physicians Advocacy Institute report, 77.6 percent of U.S. physicians are employed by hospitals, health systems or other businesses. Worse, almost 60 percent of physician practices are owned by non-physicians. And more physician practices are owned by health insurers, private equity firms and large pharmacy chains (30.1%) than by hospitals and health systems (28.4%).  Bring back the kindly family doctor who listened to you and spent time with you. Bring back Marcus Welby, MD and Dr. Kildare!

Tonight, let’s take a break from all this grimness and have a little fun with a very special friend of mine.
